International Short Film, Video and Photography Symposium

Conceived as an autonomous and authentic gesture against the formula-based standardization spreading like an uncontrollable contagion across academia and the visual arts—as it does in nearly every field—the dearie symposium titled International Short Film, Video & Photography Symposium, initiated by apart, a collective engaged in literary and visual works through an aesthetically modernist lens, has taken place in Istanbul since 2023, when the Jacobin calendars mark the months of Vendémiaire and Brumaire.

With a harvest stripped of necessity and laced with playful unpredictability, the symposium offers not a blinding fog, but a mind-refreshing mist—a kind of haze that sharpens rather than obscures. Since its very cone-like inception and unfolding, the event has welcomed imagination-driven papers, avant-garde video art pieces, and seminal discussions that bring the much needed progressive reinforcements into the fields of visual art.

Extending from 19th-century Romantics to the 20th-century Dadaists & Surrealists to today’s maneuverers of DIY* and MOC**, the apart International Short Film, Video & Photography Symposium awaits scholars, artists, and lovers of art alike.
